Opened in 1982, ‘Le Volcan’ was designed by Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer. He collaborated with Jean-Maur Lyonnet, with whom he had previously completed the headquarters of the French Communist Party. The two pure white shapes created by the two different sized volcanoes are accessible via ramps. This is a hallmark of many buildings constructed by Niemeyer. Inside the smaller of the two structures, now a library, the building is lit by small slit windows giving the light a particular look.
