A 1964 stained-glass window by Marc Chagall and master glassmaker Charles Marq is on display at the Centre Pompidou in Metz. It is called the blue rose and is a sketch for the Saint Stephen Cathedral in Metz. Chagall said he dreamt the Bible rather than illustrated it. He considered it the most significant source of poetry of all time. In this work, Christ is painted in green wearing a tefillin (a Judaic prayer object). A curly-haired figure stands upside down with a bird. It may be Saint John or a self-portrait, as Chagall enjoyed slipping into his works.
