Destroyed by the Huguenots

Faced with the growing number of pilgrims coming to worship Saint Privat, Pope Urban V ordered the construction of a cathedral in Mende in 1368. Its two towers are of different origins. The one rising at 275 ft (84 m) was financed by the nephew of the Pope, while the other, more modest, was paid by the Canons. Built in local blond stone, the cathedral was completed in 1467 and then destroyed by the Huguenots in 1581 with its Non-Pareille, the largest bell in Christianity in the 1510s. The monument was rebuilt identically from 1599 to 1605. The only entirely Gothic building in the Lozère department, Notre-Dame-et-Saint-Privat Cathedral was listed as a Historical Monument in 1906.
