Renamed Place du Général de Gaulle in 1970, the square surrounding the Arc de Triomphe in Paris was originally baptized Place de l'Étoile. Its origin dates back to 1787, when the Barrière de l'Étoile (or Barrière de Neuilly) was laid out according to the plans of Claude-Nicolas Ledoux. The star formed by the main avenues was completed under Napoleon III, and the square was redesigned by architect Jacques Hittorff. Shared between the 8th, 16th, and 17th arrondissements of Paris, Place du Général de Gaulle is the 2nd largest square in Paris after Concorde (790 ft / 241m in diameter). Its paving forms a 12-pointed star with one branch per avenue, while the streets of Presbourg and Tilsitt create a circle around the square.
