During the 20th century, Corsica experienced profound upheavals in the occupation and management of its territory. Once massively inhabited villages of the hinterland have gradually been emptied of their inhabitants and entire regions, such as Castagniccia, have moved from densely populated areas (80 to 90 inhabitants/km2) below the desertification threshold (less than 5 inhabitants/km2).
