Perched atop the cliffs, a few kilometres from the Carolles beach, the Cabane Vauban offers an impressive view overlooking the Mont-Saint-Michel bay. This guardhouse, built at the end of the 17th century on the orders of Vauban, King Louis XIV’s military architect, was decommissioned after 1815. Used for a time as a relay station for the telegraph service, it occasionally served as a shelter for customs officers. Other identical guardhouses are still visible in the region, at Champeaux, at St-Jean-le-Thomas, and at Bouillon.
