Five traditional dovecotes have been reconstructed in the Katara Cultural Village north of Doha (Qatar). Three are located in the immediate vicinity of the Katara Mosque while the other two are erected near the open-air amphitheatre. Built between 2006 and 2007, these tall, oblong, ogival structures made of clay and brick are equipped with access holes and projecting wooden perches. The holes, the exact size of a pigeon, are inaccessible to falcons, their natural predators. 49 feet (15 metres) high and 14 feet (4.25 metres) wide, Katara’s dovecotes are strategically placed in dry areas that are healthy for the pigeons and easily visible to visitors. Twenty-eight homing pigeons (fourteen pairs) imported from abroad are now bred in the dovecotes.
