In Martinique, fishing for pelagic species is essentially artisanal. It includes individual coastal fishing - such as trolling and fishing with straight surface nets - and collective fishing like beach seine fishing (photo) or Saintoise purse seine fishing. These collective practices call for more complex techniques and require a larger workforce. Coastal fishing is complemented by offshore fishing or miquelon fishing aboard Martinican skiffs and Saintois canoes. They venture up to 60 miles from the coast to capture the ocean pelagic shoals formed in the waters of the major equatorial currents. Offshore fishing remains marginal: only two fifteen-meter boats based in Fort-de-France practice drifting longline fishing for about six months a year west of the Grenadines, off Venezuela, and in the northeast of Guyana.
