In the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department, the Lac de Serre-Ponçon is surrounded by a myriad of villages and hamlets which survived the flooding of the Durance valley. Most are ancient urban structures made up of a homogeneous medieval historical core surrounding a church. The old buildings, often terraced, are tightly aligned along tiered streets so as to share the sunshine.
