From tourist resorts to the landing of 1944

The Explorers

Located in Normandy in the Calvados department, the Côte de Nacre (Pearly Coast) extends between the mouth of the Seulles at Courseulles-sur-Mer and that of the Orne at Ouistreham. It was urbanized from the 19th century and the fashion for sea bathing that encouraged the construction of railway lines and developed tourist resorts. On June 6, 1944, it served as a theater for the landing of Canadian Allied troops at Juno Beach - between Courseulles and Saint-Aubin-sur-Mer - and British at Sword Beach, between Saint-Aubin-sur-Mer and Ouistreham.
