Soils favorable to viticulture

Bordered by the Rhône to the west, the village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape is mainly located on the Burdigalian molasse of the high alluvial terraces of the Atouts. Depending on the terroirs, the clay and clay-limestone components of the soil take the form of quartzite pebbles rolled up by the Rhône and stuck in a red matrix of decomposed clay, gravelly or sandy lands, all equally favorable to viticulture.
