The predominantly red color of the volcanic projections from Puy de la Vache, in the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Nature Park, results from the oxidation of the iron they contained. It would have happened in contact with the air when the still hot volcanic bombs fell to the ground. The rocks' black color, also visible, reflects the absence of oxidation of some projections that were already too cold to trigger the process.
