Rocks from the end of the Mesozoic era

The Luberon massif is made up of rocks dating from the end of the Mesozoic era (252.2 to 66 million years ago) until the middle of the Tertiary era (66 to 2.58 million years ago). The mountain range itself consists of secondary lands from the Lower Cretaceous, while the surrounding plain mainly dates back to the Tertiary period. The predominantly limestone rocks of the Luberon are rich in fossils from the end of the Mesozoic and hold many quarries.
