Located 1.86 miles (3 km) from the village of Tautavel, the Caune de l'Arago is a cavity where scientific excavations have been undertaken since 1964. Thanks to more than 49 ft (15 m) of infill, the climatic variations of the region over time are visible. Scientists have found numerous bone remains of large mammals there, mostly accumulated by humans over more than fifty occupancy levels. Archaeozoological studies estimate that the most common preys of the Men of Tautavel were horses, deer, muskox, mouflon, bison, and many others mammals depending on the period.
