Despite their thick skin, elephants are often the prey of ticks, very irritating blood sucking parasites and vectors of diseases. In addition to mud baths, water sprays and protective dust on their bodies thanks to their trunks, elephants rub their tusks and their heads on trees to dislodge ticks. They also feed on bark, especially on the cambium layer that contains water and nutrients.
