At the base of its tail, at the level of its rump, the greater flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) has a uropygial gland with eight orifices. The size of a pea, it produces a complex oily substance mixing fats and waxes that the flamingo collects with its beak during its toilet. The bird uses it to coat its plumage in order to waterproof it.
