Although unoccupied the vast majority of the time, the Fort de Brégançon, which became a presidential resort in 1968, is regularly maintained and occupied by a couple of caretakers. In 2018, the annual cost of the site for the French State was 226,150 euros per year or 619 euros per day. Some would like to make the fort profitable by renting it to wealthy tenants, as was the case between 1919 and 1963. Other options include the transformation of the Fort de Brégançon into a residence for foreign heads of state, a museum of the Fifth Republic, or even a summer camp for disadvantaged children.
