Clos de Vougeot is a Pinot Noir famous all over the world. Its 134 plots extend over almost 123 acres (50 ha) and have no less than 85 owners. They were planted by Cistercian monks in the 12th century. In the 13th century, they surrounded them with a protective wall called the clausum (fence) of Vougeot. The castle was a dependency of the Abbey of Cîteaux until the Revolution. Since 1945, it has been owned by the Chevaliers du Tastevins (Knights of Tastevins).
