The greater flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus) of both sexes practice courtship displays that begin at the end of November in the colonies of Camargue. Performed in groups of around twenty individuals, they consist of a repeated and almost synchronized sequence of ritual postures based on displacements, movements, and rotations of the head, lengthening of the neck, the sudden opening of the wings, and feigned grooming. The highlighting of the attractiveness of the plumage is accompanied by a clamor of deep, muffled chuckles.
