The base of the Massif de l'Estérel dates from the antecarboniferous formation of the Varisque chain, which also provided the granites of the Maures and Tanneron massifs. Almost all of its outcrops date from the end of the Paleozoic and most of the rocks from the Permian (between 280 and 250 million years ago). In the Oligocene (~ 30 million years ago), a new magmatic manifestation corresponding to the alpine cycle set up small laccoliths (convex reliefs) of esterellite visible at Cap Dramont.
