Migrating birds

The Common Crane (Grus grus) is the largest bird in Europe. It has a long, sword-like beak. It can deftly peck at small seeds and acorns – which it loves in winter – but also skewer a small rodent, frog or larva. From the tip of its legs to the end of its beak, it can measure up to 1.30 m. They are powerful birds that migrate more than 1,553 miles (2,500 km) from their summer home. Most of them spend the winter in North Africa, in southern Spain and in France (Gascony moors, Lac du Der in Champagne) due to global warming.
