Morphological types adapted to various performances

The Thoroughbred has no really imposed morphological standard but rather criteria selected for the search for performance. It presents different morphological types adapted to various kinds of races. The tall, slender, and fast sprinters are thus specialized in intense events over short distances (0.6 mile / 1,000 m). The smaller stayers, on the other hand, are better suited to cross-country efforts of 1.6 miles (2,600 m) and more. Between the two, the so-called classic intermediate type has a shorter back and a less horizontal rump.
