These four vertical plates planted in the gypsum of the Qatari desert are a monumental art installation entitled “East-West/West-East”, created in 2014 by the American sculptor Richard Serra. The artist chose to set up his work in the Brouq Nature Reserve (Zekreet Peninsula) 43 miles (70 km) of Doha. He arranged his plates at irregular intervals along a straight line about 0.5 mile (0.8 km) long, and oriented them according to the cardinal points of the title. His steel monoliths sculpt the horizontal landscape and structure the space. The artist studied the topography of the terrain at length before choosing the exact location of each plate. Aligned at the same level, they form a link between the seas to the east and west, while their verticality structures the immensity and infinity of the desert by introducing a reference point.
