Precious materials for an ornamental use

This fan, visible at the Musée des Beaux-Arts et de la Dentelle (Museum of Fine Arts and Lace) of Alençon, combines the lightness of an Alençon lace enhanced with a gold thread with the refinement of a highly worked frame in mother-of-pearl and golden patterns. It reminds visitors that all sorts of materials can make up the leaf of a fan (paper, cotton, silk, feathers, lace, etc), but that not all of them would have the same use. While the function of the fan is mainly to fan, it is better to avoid openwork Point d'Alençon fans like this one. True works of art, the mainly ornamental jewelry fans, on the other hand, are perfectly adapted to the precious materials presented here.
