Salt marshes with numerous challenges

The management plan implemented by the Toulon Provence Méditerranée conurbation and its partners for the Salins d'Hyères aims to convert this former agro-industrial wasteland into a major biodiversity site. The project concerns both its avifauna and the other taxonomic groups represented. It must also combine the social demand for sharing and discovery of the place with the preservation and optimization of its ecological wealth. At the same time, the site has to face the external threats of pollution drained by anthropized watersheds, filling of peripheral wetlands, waterproofing of surrounding soils, and fauna disturbance by adjoining activities. Finally, climate change and the resulting risks of marine intrusion and submersion represent another major issue.
