The abdomen of the female cicada lacks the resonance chamber constituting the song organ in the male. Instead, it guarantees space for its future eggs and externally presents the ovipositor necessary for laying. Placed against the abdomen at rest, this egg-laying organ, similar to an auger, is used by the female to pierce the support (rod, branch) in which she hides the four hundred or so eggs she lays.
