Lava stone is a dark volcanic rock – commonly known as basalt – that forms on the surface of rapidly cooling volcanic magma. The colour of this very hard rock varies from light grey to black depending on its chemical composition. Very popular in Auvergne, it is often used for construction and decoration of buildings, as seen here in Besse-et-Saint-Anastaise.
