Alsace became part of France again after World War One. Its reintegration was short-lived with the arrival of the Second World War. Alsace was annexed to the Third Reich, and the population was traumatized. French-sounding names were given a German form. All Alsatian companies participated in the war effort, working more than 72 hours per week. The men were also incorporated into the German army by force and mostly sent to the Russian front. Considered as non-strategic, Riquewihr was spared by the bombings. Today, the Office for the Language and Cultures of Alsace supports bilingualism and campaigns for Alsatian dialects.
