Beds oriented towards the chapel

Placed in alcoves closed by red curtains, the beds of the sick and destitute of the Hospices de Beaune were covered with red blankets. All the beds arranged in two rows bordering the southern and northern walls of the room were oriented towards the open chapel located at the end of the Grande Salle des Pôvres (Great Hall of the Poor). The residents could thus follow the services in the best possible conditions without leaving their beds. All the alcoves were numbered and surmounted by a cross. A cord hanging above each bed enabled the sick to get up more easily.
