Located near the arrival of the La Meije cable car, the Girose glacier advances by about 75 ft (23 m) per year. This perpetual movement opens new crevasses and deforms the galleries of the ice cave accessible to visitors equipped with ice axes and small crampons and accompanied by mountain guides. The ephemeral sculptures of the ice cave are recut every year, and every two to three years, the cave is completely reshaped with ice picks by teams of ice sculptors.
