Golden flames on a silver pebble

The coat of arms of Pierrefeu-du-Var represents five golden flames on a silver pebble, an illustration of the village's name. Its designation, Petra Foco in Latin or Peire Fue in Provençal, was first attested in 1031 on the cartulary of the Saint-Victor Abbey in Marseille, the owner of the lands until the French Revolution. The name could be explained by the local abundance of quartzites or white rocks that, rubbed against each other, produce a spark. Another possible explanation was linked to the habit of the inhabitants of Pierrefeu, located at the top of Sainte-Croix hill, to light fires on heights to warn the neighboring villages of the arrival of Saracens and other enemies known for their raids.
