Families with different sound organs

Two families of Cicadidae are present in France: the Cicadinae family, including the Great Cicada (Lyristes plebejus) and the Gray Cicada (Cicada orni) (photo), which are among the most common and best-known cicadas, and the Tibicininae family comprising generally smaller and less common species. These different families are mainly distinguished by the morphology of their sound organ, which produces a sound specific to each species.
