The Côte d'Albâtre (Alabaster Coast), so named because the sea takes on milky hues near the chalky cliffs, is a succession of landscapes beaten by the Channel winds. It is dotted with many seaside resorts that made its reputation at the beginning of the 19th century. Up to a height of 393 ft (120 m), the plateau of cliffs is covered with grassy meadows and cultures.
