Exuvia rich in informations

Cicada exuviae - empty larvae envelopes that adult cicadas leave behind after their last molt - can stay intact in the wild for several months. The exuviae allow identifying the cicada's species and determining the sex of the individual. The exuvia of a female cicada has, in fact, an ovipositor (egg-laying organ) at the tip of the abdomen, while that of a male does not. Such a clear and almost transparent exuvia of a gray cicada (Cicada orni) bears witness to a large larva (0.78 in/20 mm minimum length).
