Diurnal and summer species

The Mediterranean species of cicadas are exclusively diurnal. Their cymbalizations last all day, from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. or 11:30 p.m. depending on the species. The dominant males start cymbalizing the earliest in the morning and finish the latest in the evening. Cicadas sing when the days are hot and sunny with temperatures exceeding 71.6°F (22°C) and when the mistral does not disturb their song by slowing their movements. If their song once coincided with the arrival of tourists for the summer holidays, it now begins earlier, sometimes at the end of May, due to global warming.
