Irreparable damage

The formidable statuary collection of Reims Cathedral suffered irreparable damage during the bombings and fire of September 1914. The Holy Virgin, leaning against the portal’s trumeau, was severely damaged. One of the coronation angels was decapitated, as was the statue of Goliath and those of many kings and prophets. The statues in the north tower were badly damaged by the fire that was started by a wooden scaffold attached to the tower. The Queen of Sheba has lost most of her sculptures and looks like a monolith. Inside, the magnificent carpet of the coronation of Charles X was burnt.
