Today frequented by mountain and ski enthusiasts, Mont-Dore resort experienced its heyday from the beginning of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century. At that time, water cures were fashionable among the upper classes. Among the spa guests of Mont-Dore palaces were members of the French and European nobility like Marie of Edinburgh (Queen of Romania) or Princess Marie of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen (mother of King Albert I of Belgium). The spa resort of Mont-Dore also welcomed personalities of the time, such as Madame de Sévigné, George Sand, Alfred de Musset, Honoré de Balzac, Anatole France, Marcel Proust and Georges Clemenceau.
