The screams of the Common Cranes (Grus grus) are so loud that they can be heard for miles around, before you even see them in the sky. Their sound is based on an original anatomical conformation of their trachea. Firstly, the crane’s windpipe is much more developed than that of other birds, with 350 bony rings. Secondly, a longer windpipe has convolutions in the wishbone, which enhances the sound capacity. In flight, cranes call every 10 to 15 seconds.
