Races followed in air-conditioned 4WDs

Located in the centre part of Qatar, in the middle of the desert, the Al Shahaniyah Camelodrome has shaded grandstands with seating for spectators who flock to the international races in March and April. Coaches, owners and keen spectators usually follow the races by driving their air-conditioned four-wheel drive vehicles on the tarmac roads that run parallel to the race tracks. From October to February, the length of the races – which vary according to the tournaments – rarely exceeds 3.1 miles (5 km), while the spring festival races (March-April) are held over distances of 3.7, 4.9 and 6.2 miles (6, 8 and 10 km). Out of season, camels can be seen training daily at around 9.30am and 5.30pm. From May to September, extreme temperatures make racing impossible.
