The currents are violent near the passages dug in the reef barrier of the east coast of Maré - exposed to the prevailing winds - where the aquatic exchanges take place between lagoon and ocean. The tide opposes the wind and agitates the waves breaking on the reefs already submerged by the twice a day rise in the sea level.
