The colors of the ochres of the Provençal Colorado of Rustrel are of animal origin. They come from the iron concentrated in the droppings of the crustaceans that lived in the sandbank that covered the region when it was submerged under a warm, shallow sea. Such an iron mass formed, in combination with the minerals of the sand, an argillaceous ferruginous association called glauconia because of its greenish color.
