Ocher is extracted from the ore present in fairly regular layers of varying thickness reaching up to 114.8 ft (35 m) in height. In open-pit deposits, the compacted ore composed of 80 to 90% of fine siliceous sand and 10 to 20% of pure ocher is blasted with a mechanical shovel. The earth covering the ore is first set aside for the future redevelopment of the quarry, then 16.4 ft (5 m) wide by 49.2 ft (15 m) high benches are created to ensure the cladding of the deposit.
