From privateers to Brigitte Bardot

A privateer city dominated by a citadel in the 16th century, Saint-Tropez became a fishing village at the beginning of the 20th century and an internationally known seaside resort on the Var Riviera from the middle of the century. It owes its fame to the enthusiasm of New Wave artists following the filming of Et Dieu… créa la femme with Brigitte Bardot in 1956. The movie and the star it created contributed to the emergence of a myth around the site, already appreciated by a certain intelligentsia since the discovery of the Saint-Tropez of painters by the writer Colette in the summer of 1925.
