Long, pointed and powerful wings

The greater flamingo (Phœnicopterus roseus) has rather long wings, the wingspan of which can reach 5.4 ft (1.65 m) in the largest males. Wide at their base and pointed at their end, they enable the flamingo to perform powerful and regular beats that propel it at speeds peaking around 37.2 mph (60 km/h) during the several hundred miles stages of the migratory flights. Slow and heavy on take-off, greater flamingos typically fly in undulating formations with their necks and legs stretched out.
