The plateaus, hills, and valleys of Haute-Provence bring together a third of the surface, two-thirds of the population, and almost all of the economic activity of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department, apart from mountain tourism and towns. Agriculture now oriented around fruits, vegetables, cereals, and high added value products such as honey, lavender, essential oils, olives, or wine has an important place. The varied production mixes temperate species on the plateaus and Mediterranean varieties at lower altitudes.
