Dentition of the hippopotamus
0
0
The lower incisors of the hippopotamus are planted almost horizontally as in many swines. The lower canines are impressive, they can reach up to 27.5inches (70cm) long. They are opposed to the upper canines. They grow continuously and have a defensive role only, being a formidable weapon. Such a bite exerts a force of about 1 ton per square centimeter. Finally, molars are used to chew th grass before swallowing it.
