Denis, the first bishop of Paris

0
According to the historian Grégoire de Tours (538-594), Denis was a missionary bishop sent from Rome to Gaul by Pope Clement I to bring the Gospel there. The bishop settled in Lutetia where he built a church, yet the Romans were still persecuting Christians. They arrested him and his disciples, Rusticus and Eleutherus. The three men were beheaded on the Mont de Mercure (today’s Montmartre), around 258. Legend has it that Denis picked up his head and walked to the north of the city, where Catulla, a pious woman, had him and his two companions buried. The name of Saint Denis, the first bishop of Paris, appears in literature around 520.
