The construction of Saint Stephen Cathedral in Metz began under the impetus of Bishop Conrad of Scharfenberg in 1220. As traditional in the Middle Ages, work started with the destruction of the nave and its reconstruction. It allowed preserving the choir and the crypt as they were and maintaining religious services during the work. The side aisles were built on a relatively low height (42 ft / 13 m) to favor the installation of high windows.
