Arctic spring thaw

0
Due to the low temperatures, Canadian Arctic Archipelago soil is very slow to form. It consists of a thin active layer of 25 centimeters to 1 meter with an annual cycle of freezing and thawing under which is permafrost, which remains frozen throughout the year. Plants combat to survive in this harsh environment: their summer growth period lasts only 50 to 60 days.
