In 1495, the county of Württemberg was elevated to the rank of duchy. After having driven the Anabaptists from his domains, the count allowed, in 1534, the introduction of the Zwinglian (Swiss) inspired Reformation. His successor imports the teachings of Luther to preserve religious unity in his possessions on both banks of the Rhine. The French influence extending in Alsace, Riquewihr was placed under the royal authority of Louis XIV in 1680. During the Revolution of 1789, the inhabitants of Riquewihr rallied to the French Republic. The Dukes of Wurtemberg-Montbéliard were ousted after the Treaty of Paris in 1796, and Riquewihr was definitively attached to France.
